From holiday intern to team leader: Andreas Deutinger Internship as a career springboard

Andreas Deutinger started at Porsche Informatik almost 14 years ago as a holiday intern and is now head of the ‘Carlos Order Management & Finance’ team. In this interview, Andreas talks about his journey so far.

In the summer of 2011, Andreas Deutinger started his first internship with us in the NADIN team (the international new car import system of Volkswagen AG). After further summer internships, he started working as a part-time software developer while studying in 2015. In 2017 he took on the role of software architect and in 2021 he became the head of the NADIN development team.

Since May last year, he has been leading his current team, Carlos Order Management & Finance.

Andreas, why have you spent your entire career at Porsche Informatik?

The decisive factor for me was the very special culture at Porsche Informatik, which stands for solidarity, openness to other opinions and the search for solutions and improvements. But I would also like to mention that I have always been challenged and supported by my superiors. I see this as a great opportunity to constantly develop myself and play a greater role in shaping the company.

Andreas has an eye for the individual needs of his team.

What challenges have you faced along the way and how have you overcome them?

Working part-time while studying is quite a challenge. You quickly learn the importance of taking responsibility, time management and communication. A big challenge at 2021 was the transition from colleague to manager. What helped me was

  • Always communicating transparently with my team about my new role.
  • I was and am committed to being personally present in meetings and in the office as often as possible.
  • I have given myself time to settle into the role of team leader.

What does leading a team mean to you and how would you describe your leadership style?

For me, leading a team means developing the talents and strengths of each individual to achieve excellent results. My leadership style is situational: I adapt to each person, giving some more responsibility and coaching others more. Flexibility is key for me.

What advice do you have for today’s interns?

Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions and contribute your ideas. Try out as much as you can to find out what you want to do in the future. If it’s IT, we’ve got something for you!

Do you have interns on your team? What do you look for in them?

We usually have at least two interns around Carlos. It is very important for us to find exciting work for them based on their previous knowledge and interests. Many of them have become colleagues over the years.

What motivates you every day at work?

I enjoy seeing the development of my employees. But I also enjoy the many opportunities to modernise the legacy system Carlos. It motivates me to find innovative solutions together and to celebrate successes.
